Secco pays serious attention to its relationship
with the local community. We would like to work
in partnership with representatives of the local
community to ensure that our project delivers positive
benefit to the community, and that any negative
impacts we may bring are minimised. An established
international consultancy, Environmental Resources
Management, was entrusted to carry out a Social
Impact Assessment for SECCO.
Secco's Social Impact Assessment was carried out
from May to July 2003. The assessment started with
132 household surveys covering 5 villages in Caojing
and Fengxian districts and 24 stakeholder interviews
with local government, contractors, and SCIP AC.
Data on the local economy, culture and society was
collected before Secco's commencement, to serve
as a baseline for comparison with periodic future
monitoring to identify changes and implement interventions
where necessary and appropriate.
The Social Impact Assessment established Secco's
commitment to working hand in hand with the community
to ensure that their concerns are addressed as the
project is constructed and then goes into production.
It also set up good network with local government
and community, as well as helping Secco identify
its positive and negative impacts on the local society
in the short and long term. This will provide Secco
with a much more objective basis for determining
its social impact management and future investment.
SECCO has started to take overall measures to enhance
positive impacts and mitigate potential negative
impacts in the area of environment, health, traffic
safety£¬management of construction workforce, community
communication and pushing the local economic development
SECCO is also enrolling the other investors within
SCIP in this effort to raise social impact awareness.
Secco has taken the lead in calling on investors
to take on their "Corporate Social Responsibility"
and partner together so that the entire SCIP will
become: "a neighbour of choice" for the
local community. |
